NFC spool tags

Stick a tag on each filament spool and your printer can know what's loaded: material, colour and temperatures. Open OpenSpool format, genuine NXP tags, posted from NSW.

What works with what

Printer makers lock their own spool readers to their own tags, so it pays to check before you buy.

The Mojo spool reader

A small box that sits by your printer. Tap a tagged spool on it and it lights up in the filament’s colour and tells the printer what’s loaded in the slot you picked. It also writes tags, so iPhone owners don’t need an Android phone.

  • Bambu Lab P1, A1 and X1: sets the AMS slot or external spool over your local network.
  • Snapmaker U1 with Extended Firmware: sets each toolhead.
  • Reads and writes the open OpenSpool format, USB-C powered, printed case.

We’re building it now and will run it on our own printers first. It needs Australian RCM approval before we can sell it, so no date or price yet. On current Bambu firmware it needs LAN-only mode and Developer Mode.

Questions

What's on the tag?

The OpenSpool format: material, colour, brand and temperatures as a small JSON record, plus bed temperature, weight and diameter. It's open, so any OpenSpool-compatible reader or app can read it, not just ours.

Which tags do you use?

Genuine NXP NTAG215 stickers, 25 mm round. We check every batch with NXP's TagInfo app, because cheap clones often fail to write.

Can I rewrite them?

Yes. We don't lock tags, so you can rewrite one with the free writer when you refill or reuse a spool.

Will these work in my Bambu AMS?

Not on their own. Bambu's AMS only accepts Bambu's own signed tags, which nobody else can make. Our tags work on Bambu printers through an OpenSpool-compatible reader sitting next to the printer, and on current Bambu firmware that needs LAN-only mode and Developer Mode.

When is the reader coming?

We're building it now and testing it on our own printers first. Before we can sell it in Australia it needs RCM approval. Join the waitlist and we'll email you once when it's ready.
